A transition into urban life
All my life I have lived in the countryside on my family’s farm estate. I was thoroughly happy and content, helping father run everything and mother taking care of the house. I also have a little brother called Drew, but he is too small to work, even if he tries, but he mostly likes to be pampered by mother. I was born and raised in rural Louisiana, which has beautiful landscapes of plains for miles on end. We had bright summers and rainy winters, and town life was lovely with our community being so tight knit. But father made some wrong investments, got in some legal problems, and we lost half our land. It turns out that father had had some issues with the Zen-Noh Grain Corporation, who have a plot next to ours, and in turn they filed a lawsuit demanding to take our home because they are filthy and rotten corporates. That’s what father likes to call them.
So we’ve had to move out of state, and we are now living in West Austin, Texas. Father landed himself a job as a construction worker while he looks for other options, and mother has been working as a waitress in a small cafe a few streets down. We’re living in a little apartment complex in a town called Rollingwood. It’s small and a bit ugly but there is a nice yard in the front where I like to play with Drew. We’ve been here three weeks already, but it feels like its been 3 months. I wish we could go back home, and that’s what I tell Drew when he complains, but I know we wont go back.
But there are some upsides to living in the city. For example, last Thursday we went out for pizza and afterwards we went to Rollingwood Park for my 10th birthday. I loved it, and I like that we can go out wherever we want because its all within a few miles. I also like that the sidewalks are smooth and next to every road, so when I go out to ride my bike I can go really fast. I especially like riding it to the playground across the block, and I always take Drew with me. Another thing I have really enjoyed about the city is the mall, because there are many stores and a playground for the kids and an ice cream place in front of that.
While I still miss home a lot, and miss our old town and all my friends, I think I can get used to the city. I know my parents are doing all they can so I try to be grateful even in days when it is more difficult. I’m going to start at the new school next month and I’m really excited about that, so I have things to look forward to. I just wanted to share my experience moving so that if another kid who is moving too sees this I can tell them that it is not all bad, and to enjoy the good parts.
